Six people were injured when a tourist boat slammed into concrete blocks off the Greek island of Zakynthos, late on Monday, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.

The boat, which was on its way back to the port of Agios Nikolaos near Volimes, northwestern Zakynthos, after an island tour, crashed into the concrete blocks.

A total of 26 people were on board, two of whom were crew members, the Coast Guard said.

Of the six injured passengers, two were taken to Zakynthos General Hospital by ambulance while the remaining four made their own way to hospital.

Five of the injured passengers received medical treatment and were discharged. A 60-year-old Greek national remained hospitalized as a precaution, according to the Coast Guard.

The 41-year-old captain of the boat was arrested and a preliminary investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Port Authority of Agios Nikolaos.

Charges have been filed against the captain and the vessel has been prohibited from sailing until a certificate of seaworthiness is submitted.

The Coast Guard said the accident did not result in any marine pollution.

The wider Volimes, which includes the villages of Agios Nikolaos, Askos, Varvara, Elies and Korithi, as well as the uninhabited islet of Agios Andreas, is located 23km northwest of Zakynthos Town.
