The trial over the deadly Tempi train disaster resumed Monday in the city of Larissa, with proceedings focusing on formal declarations of participation by victims’ families and legal representatives.

The hearing is taking place at the GAIOPOLIS complex, where the court is continuing the process of officially recognizing those supporting the prosecution in the high-profile case.

Participation process underway

According to a directive issued by the presiding judge of the three-member criminal appeals court, individuals listed in the indictment as supporting the prosecution are being admitted in stages.

Those with case numbers starting from 98 onward are entering first, while 32 individuals had already completed the process during the previous session on April 1.

Witnesses who have been summoned and wish to formally participate are scheduled to follow, along with additional victims named in the indictment who were not initially called but seek to join the proceedings.

In total, 230 individuals are listed as supporting the prosecution, while 122 witnesses are expected to testify during the trial.

Request for live broadcast under review

During the previous hearing, a request was submitted for audiovisual coverage and live broadcasting of the trial.

The request, filed by a lawyer representing victims’ families, is still under consideration, with the court expected to decide after all legal representatives have formally declared their participation.

36 defendants face serious charges

The case involves 36 defendants facing a range of serious charges tied to the rail disaster, one of the deadliest in Greece’s history.

The primary charges include felony-level offenses related to dangerous interference with rail transport safety, with potential intent, resulting in widespread risk to public safety.

Additional charges include multiple counts of negligent homicide, serious bodily harm, lesser bodily injury, and breach of duty.

Authorities allege that the actions—or failures—of those involved led to loss of life, injuries, and significant damage to public infrastructure.
