Greek authorities have solved the murder of a foreign national whose dismembered body was found in the sea near the northern city of Thessaloniki in June 2022, police announced on Thursday.
According to investigators, the victim was abducted by a group of men and taken to a remote location, where he was killed before his body was disposed of in the water.
Following a years-long investigation, police identified four men of the same nationality as the victim, as suspects in the case. One of them was arrested in Thessaloniki on May 27, while the remaining three are believed to have left Greece shortly after the crime.
Police said the case appears to stem from a personal dispute dating back to 2020. Investigators found that the victim had previously been targeted by one of the suspects, who had reportedly filed multiple complaints against him and allegedly assaulted him along with five other individuals.
After that earlier incident, the victim reportedly left Thessaloniki but returned to the city in June 2022. Authorities believe the suspects abducted him shortly after his return, murdered him and then attempted to conceal the crime by dumping the body into the sea using weighted objects.
The investigation also led police to solve a separate kidnapping case involving another man of the same nationality in 2020. Authorities say three of the suspects linked to the murder are also connected to that earlier abduction.
The investigation remains ongoing.
