A third suspect appeared before an investigating magistrate in Thessaloniki on Wednesday over his alleged role in the deadly firebomb attack on the home of the Nestora family, an assault that claimed the life of Vagia Nestora and left her daughter, Afroditi Nestora, seriously injured.

The 24-year-old man was arrested after investigators alleged that he provided access to an abandoned house that was used by those involved in the attack both before and after it was carried out.

He faces the same charges as his two co-defendants — a 29-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman who carried out the attack — both of whom were remanded in custody after testifying before the investigating magistrate a day earlier.

The 24-year-old faces the same charges as his two co-defendants, including murder and attempted murder with eventual intent and participation in a terrorist organization. According to his pre-trial statement, he has denied any involvement in the attack and sought to distance himself from the two other suspects.

He reportedly told investigators that he did not know the pair and had handed over the keys to the abandoned property to other individuals he knew, without being aware of how the premises would be used.

Afroditi Nestora to Leave Hospital

In a separate development, Afroditi Nestora is expected to be discharged later on Wednesday from Thessaloniki’s Papanikolaou Hospital after spending several days receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the attack.

She suffered burns to her hands, legs and face and in recent days had been receiving care in the hospital’s plastic surgery department under the supervision of specialist medical staff.

The attack, carried out using improvised incendiary devices commonly referred to in Greece as “gazakia” — small gas canisters adapted into firebombs — has shocked the northern city and remains under investigation by judicial and law enforcement authorities.
