Μake us preferred on Google A 38-year-old man was ordered into pretrial detention after firing shots at midday last Sunday inside a small convenience store on Kassandrou Street, in the center of Thessaloniki.
The 38-year-old is facing charges of robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, illegal use of a firearm, and reckless discharge of a weapon.
During his testimony before Thessaloniki’s 1st special investigating judge, he said he had been intoxicated at the time and cited broader problems with alcoholism. He also stated in his defense that he had no intention of committing robbery or theft. The investigating judge and prosecutor unanimously ordered his pretrial detention.
According to the case file, the defendant entered the convenience store and, under threat of violence, grabbed a bottle of alcohol. A customer in the store intervened, took the bottle away from him, and handed it back to the owner.
The 38-year-old briefly left the scene, but returned a short time later carrying a sawed-off shotgun, which he reportedly had hidden under his jacket. According to police, he was looking for the man who had intervened earlier. Unable to find him, he fired twice toward the ceiling of the store, though no one was injured.
He fled the scene immediately afterward, but was located and detained by officers from the DIAS motorcycle police unit, who had mobilized and were searching the area.
