The Greek city of Nafplio has become the center of public debate this week after organizers appear to have selected a representation of U.S. President Donald Trump as this year’s King Carnival under this year’s theme: “Politcal Upheaval”, according to local media outlet Argolida24.

In Greek Carnival tradition, King Carnival is a symbolic figure designed to satirize social and political life. The effigy is traditionally burned at the end of the main parade, a ritual meant to symbolically banish misfortune and wrongdoing.

This year’s choice, however, has divided both Nafplio residents and visitors to the historic town. Supporters argue that the depiction falls squarely within Carnival’s long-standing satirical framework, where political figures are frequently used as vehicles for humor and social commentary without intent to offend.

Critics, on the other hand, have raised concerns about targeting an active foreign political leader, warning that such symbolism could lead to misunderstandings or diplomatic sensitivities. They note that while satire is central to Carnival celebrations, the current international climate and the global profile of the figure portrayed lend added weight to the act.

According to local media reports, the issue has not prompted any official response from the U.S. Embassy in Athens.
