A 75-year-old American tourist was seriously injured after being hit by a car near the famous Leonidas monument at Thermopylae in central Greece on Tuesday.
The accident occurred shortly before noon on the old Lamia–Thermopylae national road. According to local reports, the woman had arrived at the site with a tour group by bus and attempted to cross the road to get a closer look at the statue of King Leonidas, the Spartan ruler associated with the historic Battle of Thermopylae.
As she crossed the road, she was struck by a passenger car driven by a young woman traveling from Thermopylae toward Lamia.
Witnesses said the driver was not speeding but was unable to avoid the collision.
The tourist suffered severe injuries to one of her legs and also struck her head on the road after the impact. She appeared to lose consciousness immediately after the accident.
Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene shortly afterward and carefully placed the woman on a stretcher before transporting her to Lamia General Hospital for treatment.
