Residents of Athens looked up to an unusual and eye-catching sight on Friday as distinctive virga clouds formed across the sky. The phenomenon drew attention for its dramatic appearance, with long, wispy streaks appearing to fall from clouds and dissolving before reaching the ground.

According to Meteo, the meteorological service of the National Observatory of Athens, virga occurs when precipitation begins to fall from clouds but evaporates in drier layers of air lower in the atmosphere. As a result, rain or snow never reaches the surface, instead creating visible trails beneath the clouds that fade into the air.

Meteorologists explained that these formations are a clear indication of atmospheric instability and varying humidity levels at different altitudes. While the day may appear calm at ground level, virga clouds reveal complex processes taking place higher in the atmosphere.
