The mystery surrounding the death of 19-year-old Myrto in Kefalonia is deepening, as new evidence and testimonies raise more questions than answers about her final hours.
The young woman was found in a comatose state on a public square in Argostoli in the early hours of Easter Tuesday, around 4:30 a.m., after being transported there and left behind. She later died in hospital.
Investigators say toxicology results alone will not explain what happened inside a short-term rental property where Myrto had spent the night—an Airbnb that was initially described as empty but is now believed to have hosted multiple people with interconnected relationships.
A timeline clouded by contradictions
According to emerging details, Myrto began suffering severe convulsions, reportedly linked to cocaine use, inside the apartment. What followed remains unclear, as witnesses, suspects, and those present appear to offer conflicting accounts—while key evidence, including surveillance footage, may hold critical answers.
Authorities have already ordered the pre-trial detention of three individuals connected to the case, while continuing to investigate whether more people were involved.
A 66-year-old man, who communicated with Myrto shortly before her death, has drawn particular scrutiny. He confirmed giving a lengthy statement to police and handing over his phone. He said he was introduced to the teenager through a 23-year-old man during a group video call days earlier.
“I didn’t know her well. We exchanged a few words—basic things,” he said, describing limited contact that included messages shortly before Easter.
However, investigators consider a 220-euro transfer he made via a mobile payment service around 4 a.m.—during a video call with Myrto—as a key piece of the puzzle, suggesting she was still conscious at that time.
Questions over who was really there
Further complicating the case are revelations that contradict earlier claims about the occupancy of the Airbnb. Although the property owner initially stated that only Myrto and a 23-year-old man were present due to renovation work, testimonies and evidence suggest several other individuals were inside the building that night.
Reports indicate that multiple rooms were occupied, including one next to Myrto’s, where an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man—now among the accused—were staying. Other individuals, including a 26-year-old weightlifter and a 56-year-old man with his partner, were also reportedly on-site.
Witness accounts describe shouting coming from Myrto’s room before she was found unconscious. One testimony claims that when the 22-year-old entered the room, he found her on the floor and attempted to revive her before she was eventually taken outside.
Missing footage and new allegations
Questions are also mounting over surveillance footage from the property. While a camera reportedly recorded the entrance, its footage was not immediately handed over to authorities after a request was allegedly made to withhold it.
Adding to the intrigue, a former police official publicly claimed that one of the individuals involved had earlier met someone who supplied drugs that night.
Police are now examining the possibility that more individuals may be implicated beyond those already detained, as the investigation expands.
Family demands answers
Myrto’s family insists that her death may be linked to broader criminal activity. Her father has raised concerns about the handling of her mobile phone, suggesting it may have changed hands after her death.
Her sister has issued a public appeal for information, urging anyone with knowledge of the events to come forward—even anonymously.
“For me, everyone is responsible until proven otherwise,” she said. “If people speak, we may be shocked by what comes out.”
As the investigation continues, the case has gripped Greece, with many unanswered questions lingering over what exactly happened in the final hours before a young woman’s life came to a sudden and mysterious end.
