A wildfire broke out late Monday near the town of Keratea in eastern Attica prefecture, southeast of the greater Athens-Piraeus area, triggering a large-scale firefighting operation as strong winds complicated efforts to contain the flames.
The fire erupted in an area of low vegetation near Lavriou Avenue, with authorities focusing on preventing the blaze from spreading toward nearby homes and businesses. Gusty conditions in the area were hampering firefighting efforts and increasing the risk of rapid fire growth.

The fire brigade deployed 61 firefighters, a specialized ground crew and 25 vehicles to the scene. Crews were working through the night to bring the fire under control and prevent new flare-ups.
Authorities urged residents and motorists to avoid the area while firefighting operations remained underway.
The latest outbreak comes during a period of elevated wildfire concerns across much of Greece, with civil protection authorities repeatedly warning that strong winds, dry vegetation and rising temperatures are creating favorable conditions for fire ignition and spread. In recent days, several regions, including Attica prefecture, have been placed under heightened wildfire alert, prompting increased readiness by emergency services and calls for the public to exercise caution outdoors. Fire prevention officials have also stressed the importance of clearing combustible vegetation around properties as the summer fire season intensifies.
The fire follows a series of wildfire incidents reported around the country this month.
