Strong northerly winds and brief spells of rain are affecting parts of Greece on Monday, with conditions expected to improve later in the day, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service.
Winds in the Aegean are forecast to reach up to 8 Beaufort, locally rising to 9 Beaufort in southeastern areas during the morning before gradually easing from the afternoon. Temperatures are set to climb to 20–22°C across the mainland and Ionian regions, and 18–19°C in the Aegean.
Rain in eastern regions, clearer skies elsewhere
Cloud cover and local rain are expected in the Sporades, Evia, the Cyclades, Crete, the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese, with conditions improving quickly as the day progresses. Isolated thunderstorms are likely early in the morning in southern parts of the Dodecanese and Crete.
Elsewhere, the weather will remain mostly clear, although temporary cloud cover may develop over mainland areas in the afternoon. Localized showers are possible in mountainous regions, particularly in the Peloponnese.
Winds will be westerly at 3–4 Beaufort in western Greece, while eastern areas will experience northerly winds at 3–5 Beaufort, strengthening to 6–7 in the Aegean and up to 9 in the southeast.
Regional breakdown
In Macedonia and Thrace, conditions will remain mostly clear, with some afternoon cloud over mountainous areas and increasing cloud cover in Thrace after midday. Temperatures will range from 7 to 21°C, lower in western Macedonia.
The Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Central Greece and the western Peloponnese will see mostly clear skies, with clouds building later and a chance of showers in mountainous parts of the Peloponnese. Temperatures will reach up to 22°C.
In Thessaly, eastern Central Greece, Evia and the eastern Peloponnese, intermittent cloud cover and possible rain are expected in the Sporades and Evia before clearing. Elsewhere, conditions will be mostly fair with some mountain cloud. Temperatures will range from 8 to 21°C.
The Cyclades and Crete will experience cloudy conditions with local rain, particularly in Crete where early morning thunderstorms are possible. Weather will improve from midday in the Cyclades and later in the afternoon in Crete, with strong northerly winds reaching 7–8 Beaufort.
The eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese will also see cloud and rain, mainly in the Dodecanese, with early thunderstorms possible. Winds will reach up to 9 Beaufort before easing later in the day. Temperatures will range from 13 to 19°C.
In Attica, skies will remain mostly clear with some midday cloud, while temperatures will range from 9 to 20°C. Thessaloniki will see clear conditions with lighter northerly winds and temperatures between 8 and 20°C.
Warmer weather ahead
Looking ahead, conditions will stabilize in the coming days. Tuesday will be mostly clear with some cloud in the southeast and a chance of isolated showers in mountainous areas of the Peloponnese and western Central Greece. Morning fog is expected in western regions, with temperatures rising to 25°C.
Wednesday will remain largely clear with thin cloud cover and reduced visibility in mainland areas early in the day, followed by a slight increase in temperatures.
By Thursday, cloud cover will increase in western, central and northern areas, with a chance of light rain but no significant temperature change.
On Friday, skies will be partly cloudy with occasional thicker cloud and possible local showers in northern mountainous areas. Southerly winds will strengthen, and temperatures will remain slightly above seasonal averages.
