A moving wildlife rescue story in eastern Attica has turned into a remarkable tale of survival and freedom, according to an announcement by the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA).

The wolf, which had been caught in an illegal snare back in April, was successfully rescued and managed to cover more than 100 kilometers in just 72 hours, reaching the area around Lake Yliki.

The animal’s journey was tracked through a satellite collar fitted immediately after its rescue. The data revealed the impressive capacity of the species to travel long distances and seek out new territories.

The rescue operation was carried out through a collaboration between the organizations Callisto and ANIMA, the NECCA Attica Protected Areas Management Unit, and the Forestry Service. The coordinated response by all parties involved prevented the worst and allowed the animal to return to its natural habitat.
