Relatives, friends, and fans of Mimis Domazos, the “General” of Greek football, will bid their final farewell today, Monday, January 27. His body will lie in state for public veneration at the chapel of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with his funeral taking place later in the day at the First Cemetery of Athens.
Before arriving at the Metropolitan Cathedral, the body of Mimis Domazos will make a stop outside the “Apostolos Nikolaidis” Stadium, the historic home of Panathinaikos.
As reported, the hymn of Panathinaikos will play over the stadium’s loudspeakers, also known as “Leoforos,” while the image of the “General” will be displayed on the matrix board, paying tribute to his legacy.
Mimis Domazos passed away at the age of 83 due to multiple organ failure after contracting COVID-19 and suffering a cardiac arrest.
He collapsed on January 22 in Chalandri, outside a diagnostic center. Paramedics arrived promptly, resuscitated him, and transported him to the nearest hospital.
Although doctors managed to stabilize him, Domazos had been intubated and hospitalized in the ICU of the “Red Cross” hospital. The “General” passed away on January 24.
Panathinaikos, the team he cherished his whole life and the one that adored him like no other, bid an emotional farewell to the legendary “general,” the greatest footballer to ever wear the “trefoil” jersey.
“The Panathinaikos family mourns today the loss of the best of the best, Mimi Domazos. It is a day of mourning for the club. Our iconic Panathinaikos “General” has passed into eternity. He will remain immortal in the memory of all of us and his achievements will remind future generations that Mimis Domazos was one and only.”
