José Luis Mendilibar will leave the helm of Olympiacos FC after the Piraeus club officially announced the end of its cooperation with the Spanish coach on Wednesday, bringing to a close a highly successful spell that included the club’s first European trophy and a historic domestic treble.
Mendilibar joined Olympiacos in February 2024 and led the club to the UEFA Conference League title that season, making Olympiacos the first Greek club to win a major European club competition. The following season, he guided the team to the Greek league, Greek Cup and Greek Super Cup Championship titles as Olympiacos marked its 100th anniversary with a domestic treble.
The club described Mendilibar as an integral part in some of the greatest moments in its history and said he would always hold a special place in the club’s history and among its fans.
“In football, as in life, there are cycles that eventually come to an end,” Olympiacos said in its farewell message, adding that Mendilibar’s achievements would remain part of the club’s history.
The decision came after Olympiacos defeated Volos 3-2 in the Greek Cup on Wednesday, its second consecutive win in the competition. Mendilibar had spoken to reporters after the match, praising the performances of stars Gustavo Puerta and Armando Gonzalez.
The departure marks the end of a period in which Mendilibar became closely identified with Olympiacos’ transformation into a major force in European football.
Olympiacos thanked the 65-year-old coach for his contribution and said the “appreciation, respect and love” of the club’s fans would remain with him.
