Authorities on the Greek island of Santorini are voicing strong opposition to the creation of an exclusive beach club on Vlychada Beach by Royal Caribbean Group.
The beach club, which was announced last year by the cruise giant, opened its doors to passengers this week.
In a statement issued by the mayor’s office, the municipality reiterated its opposition to what it described as “private” or “closed” tourist zones reserved exclusively for cruise passengers.
“We reiterate our opposition to any plan that foresees the creation of private or ‘closed’ tourist zones on Santorini for the exclusive use of cruise passengers,” the statement said.
Municipal officials emphasized that Santorini has built its global reputation as a cruise destination through open access, local economic participation, and respect for the island’s identity.

“Santorini has long been one of the world’s leading cruise destinations, developing a relationship of interaction and mutual benefit with the cruise industry,” the statement continued. “This relationship is based on open access, the distribution of tourism benefits throughout the local community, and respect for the island’s character.”
The project marks Royal Caribbean Group’s first private beach club venture in Europe. During the presentation of the project last autumn, the company said the concept was also designed to help reduce congestion in heavily visited areas.
However, Santorini officials argue that the creation of exclusive-use tourist areas undermines the island’s social and economic fabric. “The choice to create ‘closed’ zones is not merely a business practice,” the municipality said. “It is a perception directed against the island, the local community, and the economy.”
The municipal authority also confirmed that it has requested inspections by Greece’s Environment Ministry on the legality of the construction and installations. According to the statement, requests were submitted in November 2025 and again in April this year.
The municipality additionally called on local institutions and tourism professionals to support its position.
“Santorini is a living destination that belongs to everyone,” the statement concluded.
