Authorities on the Greek island of Chios have arrested a 67-year-old caregiver after hidden camera footage revealed the repeated physical and verbal abuse of an 82-year-old woman suffering from dementia.
The video, recorded inside the victim’s home, shows the caregiver striking and verbally assaulting the elderly woman, who can be heard pleading for the attacks to stop. The case has been referred to the courts, while a forensic examination has confirmed evidence of abuse.
Family suspicions led to discovery
The case came to light after the victim’s family noticed a sudden deterioration in her condition. According to local media, the woman—who required constant supervision—had begun sleeping up to 20 hours a day, raising concerns she may have been given medication without consent.
In response, relatives installed a hidden camera on April 30, 2026, during the caregiver’s day off. Within 24 hours, the footage confirmed their fears.

Footage reveals repeated violence
The material captures multiple instances of abuse. The caregiver is heard berating the elderly woman and accusing her of attempting to get out of bed, before physically assaulting her.
In one particularly distressing moment, the victim is heard saying: “Don’t hit me, I didn’t do anything,” as she remains unable to defend herself.
Following the discovery, the family immediately contacted police, who arrested the caregiver.
Second Case on the Island in a Week
The incident comes amid another disturbing case on the island. Days earlier, a 98-year-old man with dementia was subjected to severe abuse by a 70-year-old caregiver, again, discovered via a hidden camera.
According to testimony from the victim’s daughter, the caregiver shook, struck and tied the elderly man’s hands, while also pulling his ear and hair. She stopped when a knock came at the door. The man’s daughter entered the room in shock, but the caregiver brazenly denied everything.
The daughter later described visible injuries, including bruises, blood and signs of trauma. “He had marks on his hands and bruises. There was blood I had noticed that morning, but I thought he had injured himself. I could not imagine something like this,” she said, adding that her father appeared frightened even when being cared for.
The man was hospitalized following the incident but died 12 days later.
