A tragedy has unfolded in the region of Magnesia, where a 96-year-old woman ended her life, unable to cope with the loss of her daughter. According to reports, the elderly woman chose to set herself on fire in the yard of her home, an act that has deeply shocked the local community.
The woman, who lived alone in a village in the Almyros area, was reportedly often heard saying “what do I need life for” after the death of her 60-year-old daughter. Although she had the support of her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren, she appears to have been unable to overcome the profound loss.
According to local outlet mangesianews.gr, at around 11:00 p.m. on April 27, the 96-year-old went out into her yard, poured alcohol over her body and set herself on fire using a lighter. Her death was instantaneous.
The tragic scene was discovered by her son, who lives on the upper floor of the same house. Early in the morning, at around 5:30 a.m., he went downstairs to check on his mother and found her dead in the yard.
Next to the body, a bottle of alcohol and a lighter were found, while according to authorities no note was discovered explaining the reasons behind her act.
An ambulance and police officers were called to the scene, who ruled out the possibility of criminal activity. A forensic examination and autopsy have been ordered by the police to determine the exact causes of the 96-year-old’s death.
