Shocking footage aired by Mega Channel on Monday shows the violent abuse of a 98-year-old man by his live-in caregiver, prompting legal action and public outrage on the eastern Aegean island of Chios (Hios).
In the footage broadcast on Mega, the victim raises his hands to defend himself, but the caregiver restrains and ties them, continuing to beat him while ordering him to “behave.”
The abuse was uncovered when the man’s daughter entered the room after hearing noises. Confronting the caregiver—identified as “Maria”, she accused her of hitting her father. The caregiver denied the allegations, even after being told the incident had been recorded.
According to reporting by Live News on Mega, the family had grown suspicious after noticing bruises on the elderly man’s wife. The caregiver had been aware of the camera installation and reportedly expressed no concern, claiming she was performing her duties properly.
The victim’s daughter said both parents endured abuse for about a month. She described finding her father trembling in a fetal position, saying he had been tied up and slapped.
Victim Dies After Hospitalization
Following the abuse, the 98-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition and died 12 days later.
The abuse was first discovered by the victim’s granddaughter, who said she came across the footage while remotely checking on her grandparents.
The family has filed a lawsuit against the caregiver. However, prosecutors ordered her release pending trial, a decision that has angered relatives. The daughter expressed concern that the woman has left Chios and could seek similar work elsewhere.
According to the same Mega report, the caregiver had allegedly faced prior complaints over abusive behavior toward elderly individuals.
