A three-month-old baby was found alive inside a trash bin in the municipality of Alimos, a southern suburb of Athens, on Wednesday. The bin was located outside the Phaleron War Cemetery, along Poseidonos Avenue.
The infant was quickly rescued by a local resident who, alerted by the sound of crying, contacted the police and emergency medical services. The baby was dressed and covered with branches, but appeared to be in stable condition. Paramedics from the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB) transported the child to Children’s Hospital “P. & A. Kyriakou” in Athens, where initial examinations found no immediate health concerns.
Investigation Underway
Greek authorities are now investigating the disturbing case and have obtained surveillance footage that has become central to the probe. The video reportedly shows a 42-year-old woman, speaking with a man inside a supermarket. Shortly afterward, the man is seen leaving the premises with the baby in his arms.
The woman in question, of Roma origin, introduced herself as the paternal grandmother of the infant. She claimed that the incident began when she was approached by a stranger at a supermarket in Omonia. According to her statement, the man initially asked to hold the baby while she continued shopping. When she refused, he allegedly offered to buy the child. After she declined again, she claims the man forcefully took the baby and fled.
Approximately two hours later, the baby was discovered in the trash.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman entered the supermarket with the man, and that they appeared to be shopping together. After his departure, she was seen looking for the baby.
Police are treating the woman’s version of events with skepticism. Investigators are reviewing additional security footage from the Omonia area to verify the sequence of events.
In addition to locating the unidentified man, police are also searching for the baby’s mother, believed to be in Salamina, to determine her involvement, if any, in the case.
