Outrage has gripped Ceuta following a series of incidents involving violence against animals. According to a witness at the scene, a group of irregular migrants captured and beat a young dolphin to death in the shallow waters of Tarajal beach, sparking an angry reaction from residents who witnessed the scene.

An additional incident came to light. According to Remix News, a local resident managed to disarm and stop an irregular migrant who was heading back to the migrant camp with a live goose, apparently meant for dinner.

The revelation of the extreme mistreatment of the dolphin has stirred anger in the local community. , the mammal was approached by a group of men who forcibly pulled it out of the water and struck it on the head with a piece of wood. The perpetrators then reportedly lifted the animal’s lifeless body into the air, showing it off like a trophy, while some of them cheered and laughed.

Residents step in amid public outcry

A bystander who witnessed the incident tried to confront the men, shouting: “They just caught a dolphin, this is a dolphin, you can’t touch it. No, no, you can’t do this. It’s a dolphin. You can’t eat it.” The migrants present reportedly gestured that the animal was already dead, with one of them miming a slitting motion across its throat.

Leaving the beach, the eyewitness, according to the Daily Mail, said angrily: “The beach killed a dolphin, with blood on its head. There you go, they killed a protected species, and a baby dolphin at that.”

Nadia GarcĂ­a GĂłmez, who started the campaign to identify those responsible, said: “On Wednesday, September 2, 2026, a disoriented young dolphin swimming close to shore at Tarajal beach in Ceuta was violently pulled from the water. Witnesses and local media reported that the animal was treated like an object and struck violently on the head with a piece of wood, causing its immediate death. The shocking images shared on social media show those responsible showing off the dead body of the cetacean as if it were a trophy.

This act of extreme and unjustified cruelty cannot go unpunished. Dolphins are strictly protected under Spanish and European law, and mistreating them is a serious criminal offense. We are therefore filing this report to demand that the Government Delegation in Ceuta, the Department of the Environment and SEPRONA act with the utmost urgency. We demand that every available means be used to formally identify those involved in this killing and that the full weight of the law fall on them, applying the maximum penalties for the crime of animal abuse resulting in death.”

Second animal abuse incident prevented

After the young dolphin’s death, another animal abuse incident unsettled Ceuta. A local resident happened to be at the scene at the right moment and stopped an irregular migrant from returning to his camp with a goose.

The man was caught holding a goose tied up inside a plastic bag. When the Ceuta resident confronted him, he threw the bird to the ground and fled.

The incident took place near the city’s reservoirs, a short distance from the temporary migrant reception center, where around 10,000 people are currently staying. This has added to local residents’ concerns.

Tensions rising in Ceuta

The incident adds to the already tense atmosphere in the Spanish enclave following the mass arrival of tens of thousands of migrants. The local community is watching the escalation of these incidents with growing concern.

Local authorities are separately investigating a number of serious criminal cases, including 23 reported sexual assaults and other violent incidents, further fueling residents’ unease.
