Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis pledged that Greece, as chair of the Committee on the Protection of Children in Armed Conflict, was committed to supporting the reconstruction of affected areas, such as Lebanon, during his address at the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The Greek minister presented the country’s National Strategy for the prevention of child violence from the podium. Gerapetritis will continue his diplomatic contacts in the United States, where he is scheduled to meet, among others, with the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The head of Greek diplomacy mentioned the ongoing war in Ukraine, stating, “Today marks four years since the Russian attack on Ukraine, which has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths.”
He went on to underline the significance of unity in light of Russia’s aggression. “It is important today to unite our voices against aggression and against every form of revisionism. We must join forces for peace in the region so that, at last, we may see positive results in Ukraine,” he noted.
The Greek minister stated his presentation was warmly received by a significant audience of member states of the United Nations General Assembly, UN officials, as well as representatives of the Council of Europe.
“Greece is present in developments in the Middle East. Lebanon is a neighboring country of the European Union. We will be present both in reconstruction efforts and, of course, in providing humanitarian assistance,” he underlined.
