A 46-year-old Greek national has been charged in the United Kingdom under the National Security Act following a counterterrorism investigation linked to alleged activities on behalf of Iran targeting a London-based Iranian journalist.
British police said Ioannis Aidinidis, who resides in Munich, Germany, was charged Friday with assisting a foreign intelligence service under the UK’s National Security Act 2023. Authorities said the allegations relate to Iran and concern the targeting of a journalist working for Farsi-language broadcaster Iran International.
Aidinidis is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court later Friday.
According to Counter Terrorism Policing London, the suspect was arrested on May 16 in the West Sussex area by police officers and the anti-terrorism unit. He was detained under provisions of the UK’s National Security Act while investigators obtained warrants extending his detention pending consultation with the Crown prosecution service.
British authorities said there was no indication of a greater threat to the public connected to the case.
Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, was quoted as saying that authorities recognized concerns within Farsi-language media communities and were continuing to work closely with organizations and individuals regarding safety and security issues linked to the investigation.
Iran International, a Persian-language television network critical of the Iranian regime, has previously reported threats and intimidation campaigns allegedly linked to Tehran. British authorities in recent years have increased scrutiny of suspected Iranian intelligence operations in the UK, including alleged plots targeting dissidents, journalists and media organizations.
