Delivery workers employed by efood and Wolt in the Attica region will hold a work stoppage today from 7:00 p.m. until midnight, a protest that coincides with the Club World Cup final. According to the unions representing the workers, the action is aimed at securing stable employment, adequate pay, and stronger health and safety protections.

The mobilization extends beyond Athens. The efood workers’ union said similar work stoppages will take place in Thessaloniki, Larissa, Volos and Messinia, describing the protest as a nationwide campaign.

In a statement, the union accused the company of cutting pay, relying on what it called illegal subcontracting practices, increasing work intensity and refusing to sign a collective labor agreement.

Among its key demands are the abolition of the subcontracting model, the direct hiring of couriers by efood, higher earnings for freelance riders, a guaranteed minimum hourly wage, accident and sickness benefits for all couriers, free protective equipment, the option for freelancers to become salaried employees, and a collective labor agreement covering all job categories.

The protest comes just four days after the death of a 20-year-old delivery rider in the Athens suburb of Agia Paraskevi, an incident that has renewed concerns over working conditions in the sector.

In a separate statement, the union said workplace accidents involving platform-based couriers have become an almost daily occurrence, with some proving fatal while many others go unreported, calling for greater transparency and stronger protections for those employed in the rapidly expanding digital delivery industry.
