Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday held a round of separate meetings with several heads of state and governments on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly, and specifically with the president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Egyptian PM Mostafa Kamal Madbouly, the president of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Wonie Bio and the president of Yemen Rashad Al-Alimi.
During his meeting with Aliyev, the two men discussed strengthening energy cooperation, especially vertical natgas interconnections. Mitsotakis also welcomed a recent agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, citing a positive development for peace in the Caucasus.
In his meeting with Madbouly, the two leaders discussed what was described as a bilateral strategic relationship and the signifiance of cooperation on migration. They also discussed the status of the historic Greek Orthodox St. Catherine’s of Sinai Monastery.
During his meeting with the leader of Sierra Leone, discussions touched on cooperation within the framework of the UN Security Council.
Finally, during his meeting with Yemeni leader, Mitsotakis expressed his support for the government in the strife-plagued country, while reiterated the importance of free maritime navigation, a direct reference to attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels based in north Yemen.
