Palestinian elections set for November after 20-year gap

Abbas decree calls first legislative vote in decades for West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has issued a decree setting November 28 as the date for parliamentary elections. If they go ahead, these would be the first legislative elections in Palestinian territories in roughly two decades, marking a major political shift for the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the decree calls on Palestinian citizens in Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip to take part in free, direct elections to choose members of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
