A 20-year-old Portuguese tourist was killed on Tuesday, August 18, in Ksamil, in southern Albania’s riviera, following a violent altercation at a well-known tourist resort in the area.
A few hours later, Albanian authorities arrested a 29-year-old man who worked as a lifeguard at a local hotel. He was found hiding in the trunk of a car after two Turkish nationals traveling in the vehicle allegedly helped him flee.
According to information released so far, tensions reportedly began inside a nightclub located within the resort complex following an incident said to have involved a young woman. The situation quickly spiraled out of control and turned into a violent confrontation.
What Witnesses Say About the Incident
The incident reportedly occurred at around 2:30 a.m. Friends of the victim told authorities that the confrontation escalated and the 20-year-old tried to intervene to stop the fight.
According to witness accounts reported by Albania’s Top Channel, he was then stabbed several times, including in the back and chest. His injuries proved fatal.
Following the attack, the 20-year-old left the club and was left on the beach, where his body remained for approximately three hours before it was found.
A total of 41 people were brought in for questioning as part of the investigation, and 11 were arrested. Among those arrested were four waiters who allegedly took part in the initial fight and assaulted the 20-year-old, as well as four people who worked as security staff at the establishment.
According to police, the security staff failed to intervene to stop the altercation and did not notify authorities after the incident.
