The black chiffon dress in question was worn by the late Princess of Wales on her first outing after news broke of the infidelity of her ex husband King Charles III in September of 1994. Dubbed the “revenge dress”, it was one of the most risqué royal appearances of Diana Spencer—it’s long been presumed by the public the dress was intentionally provocative to spark jealousy in her former partner.

The iconic royal fashion piece will be going up for sale on Dec. 9th during Sotheby’s Luxury Week in New York. The garment is estimated to fetch up to £220,000—almost tripling in value since Diana herself first auctioned it off to raise money for charity in 1997.

A part of cultural history
Sotheby’s head of handbags and accessories Morgane Halimi issued a statement explaining that while the design of the dress was not innovative for its time, it “represents one of those very rare moments when a garment transcends fashion to become part of culture history.”
Diana’s fashion has long been emulated decades after her unfortunate passing, with people and brands consistently referencing or recreating past photographs of the Princess.
