A rare public protest against Russia’s government took place in St. Petersburg on October 13, drawing international attention for its bold anti-war and anti-Putin stance. Hundreds of young Russians gathered at Kazanskaya Square, joining street musicians and singing banned songs, including the rap anthem Co-operative Swan Lake by Noize MC. The song, which has been prohibited by court order, expresses opposition to Putin, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the mass mobilization and conservative measures imposed by the government. Its lyrics highlight the protesters’ defiance.

The demonstration comes at a time of mounting economic pressure in Russia, partly due to the war’s impact on energy infrastructure and the country’s consideration of importing fuel despite being a leading global oil and gas exporter.
Authorities acted quickly following the gathering. Police arrested 18-year-old Diana Loginova, who reportedly led chants and songs during the protest. She faces charges for organizing a public assembly.
Noize MC, whose real name is Ivan Alekseev, fled to Lithuania shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His song has been banned by a court ruling since May.
Public protests of this nature are exceptionally rare in Russia, and participants risk severe legal consequences, underscoring the courage of the young demonstrators.
