U.S. President Donald Trump shared on his Truth Social account an interview given by Greek Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou to Breitbart, underscoring Greece’s growing importance in the energy strategy of both the United States and Europe.
In the interview with Breitbart Washington bureau chief Matthew Boyle, Papastavrou argued that the Trump administration has transformed energy policy into an instrument of strategic power.
According to the minister, energy is no longer viewed solely as an economic issue, but increasingly as a field of geopolitical competition and a means of strengthening the resilience of U.S. allies.
Papastavrou described energy diplomacy as a defining feature of Washington’s foreign policy approach, linking Greece’s energy strategy to supply security, diversification of energy sources, and geopolitical stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Within this framework, he presented Greece as a country that has steadily reinforced its position on the regional energy map through investments in liquefied natural gas infrastructure and cross-border energy interconnections.
He noted that Greece could serve as a gateway for the distribution of American LNG to Southeastern Europe and Ukraine, contributing to efforts to diversify energy supplies and reduce dependence on Russian natural gas.
Citing the Athens News Agency, Papastavrou also linked energy cooperation to the “3+1” framework involving Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the United States.
He argued that the partnership can support development and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean while also acting as a deterrent against unilateral actions and destabilizing behavior in the region.
