President Donald Trump said Saturday he is raising a global tariff to 15%, up from 10%, following a Supreme Court decision that struck down most of his second-term trade duties.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the increase would take effect immediately. He described the move as the result of a “thorough, detailed, and complete review” of what he called a “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American” decision issued a day earlier by the United States Supreme Court.

Tariff Increase Takes Effect Immediately
Trump said the new rate would lift the existing 10% worldwide tariff on countries to the “fully allowed, and legally tested” 15% level.
He argued that many countries had been “ripping” off the United States for decades “without retribution,” adding that his administration had changed that dynamic.
The president framed the increase as a direct response to the court’s ruling, which overturned most of the tariffs imposed during his second term.
Supreme Court Ruling Prompted Swift Action
The Supreme Court rejected the administration’s argument that a 1977 law — the International Emergency Economic Powers Act — implicitly authorized the tariffs in question. The decision invalidated a large portion of the trade measures enacted under that authority.
Following the ruling, Trump reinstated a 10% global tariff under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, a provision that allows tariffs of up to 15% for 150 days. Saturday’s announcement raises that rate to the maximum permitted under that statute.
Section 122 provides temporary authority. Trump has indicated that once the 150-day period ends, the administration plans to shift to Section 301 of the Trade Act, which allows for more permanent tariffs but requires investigations before they can be imposed.
New Tariffs Planned in Coming Months
In his post, Trump said that “during the next short number of months,” his administration will determine and issue new tariffs that comply with legal requirements.
He said the forthcoming measures would continue what he described as an “extraordinarily successful” effort to strengthen the U.S. economy and advance his “Make America Great Again” agenda.
