Britain and Ukraine are set to formalize a partnership to sell drone technology internationally during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s visit to London on Tuesday. The agreement is part of a broader effort to reinforce Kyiv’s security and maintain European support amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
The talks will be joined by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, focusing on drones, electronic warfare, and Euro-Atlantic security, underscoring the strategic importance of Ukraine’s expertise in unmanned systems.
Drones and AI at the Forefront
Four years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country has emerged as a leader in drone and anti-drone technologies. Britain aims to leverage that expertise to support nations in the Gulf region, which have been regularly targeted by Iranian-supplied Shahed drones, also used by Moscow in the war in Ukraine.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that “drones, electronic warfare and rapid battlefield innovation are now central to national and economic security,” highlighting the intersection of technological innovation and military strategy.
The agreement includes a new military-industrial partnership designed to increase the supply of drones and ensure the effective use of AI on the battlefield. Britain will combine Ukraine’s expertise with its own manufacturing base and has pledged £500,000 ($660,000) for a new AI centre in Kyiv focused on frontline applications.
Coordinated European Support
Starmer stressed that European allies must not be distracted by the Middle East conflict, warning that the spike in global energy prices should not benefit Russia. The visit will also explore progress on the Coalition of the Willing, a mechanism to maintain sanctions pressure on Moscow and support Ukraine in case of a ceasefire.
Britain is additionally working with Finland, the Netherlands, and other countries to establish a joint defense financing and procurement mechanism, aimed at boosting demand, accelerating investment, and increasing munitions availability.
