The United States has underscored Greece’s pivotal role in Europe’s shift away from Russian natural gas, as the European Union moves to phase out imports by 2027.
In a social media statement, US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle praised the EU’s RePowerEU legislation, describing the initiative as a crucial step in achieving energy independence. The legislation sets a clear target for the EU to completely end Russian gas imports by autumn 2027.

Ambassador Guilfoyle also emphasized the United States’ readiness to support European countries with reliable natural gas supplies, citing key infrastructure projects like the Vertical Corridor as central to strengthening regional energy security.
The Vertical Corridor project relies on strategic collaboration between American and Greek energy infrastructures, designed to enhance both the stability of European energy networks and local economic growth.
“The United States welcomes and supports Europe’s move toward energy independence, and Greece plays a central role in this transition,” Guilfoyle said.
Experts note that the combination of legislative action under RePowerEU and infrastructure projects like the Vertical Corridor will be critical in securing a stable, diversified energy supply for Europe, reducing reliance on Russian energy sources and boosting geopolitical resilience.
