Some cultural icons never truly fade from public memory. For Greece, Aliki Vougiouklaki remains one of those enduring figures. Three decades after her death, her name continues to evoke admiration, nostalgia and deep emotion among generations of Greeks who grew up watching the beloved actress on stage and screen.

On June 17, the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus opened what many described as a gateway to the past with the unveiling of a permanent space dedicated to the country’s most celebrated star. More than a conventional exhibition, the initiative invites visitors into Vougiouklaki’s authentic dressing room, the very place where she reportedly prepared for performances, reflected on future projects and transformed herself before stepping onto the stage.

Visitors can explore a collection of personal belongings alongside original costumes worn in some of her most memorable performances. Among the standout exhibits is the costume from The Merry Widow, regarded as one of the most recognizable symbols of her theatrical career. Rare handwritten notes and personal documents also form part of the display, helping to reveal a more private and human side of the star whose public image was often associated with glamour and success.

Those behind the project emphasized that the space was intended to be far more than a simple exhibition. It was conceived as a symbolic return of Vougiouklaki to the environment she loved most: the theatre stage.

The reconstruction of the dressing room was undertaken by her longtime collaborator and set designer, who sought to preserve the authenticity of the original space while honoring her legacy. Rather than creating a theatrical imitation, he focused on faithfully recreating a room that had once been an integral part of her artistic life.
