Exploring Everyday Spaces Through Surrealist Art

This new Athens solo exhibition combines sculpture, drawing and light-based installations to explore humor, mystery and the complexities of human experience through common rooms and objects

Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou Gallery will present A Bathroom and Other… Unexpected Human Stories, a solo exhibition by Looper running from June 11 to July 4, 2026. Curated by art historian Yannis Bolis, the exhibition brings together sculptural installations, symbolic constructions and large-scale drawings that transform familiar subjects into uncanny and thought-provoking visual experiences.

At the center of the exhibition is Bathroom, an original life-size sculptural installation that recreates a domestic bathroom complete with its furnishings and everyday objects. Constructed from cardboard and plexiglass, the work reimagines a commonplace interior through a surreal lens, creating an environment that appears to emerge directly from the world of Surrealist art.

The artist’s box-like sculptures combine aluminum, steel and plexiglass with fluorescent light, using transparency, reflection and shadow to create atmospheric works that evoke both stained glass and dreamlike architectural spaces. Light becomes an essential component of the compositions, shaping the viewer’s perception and intensifying their mysterious character.

The exhibition also highlights Looper’s large-scale ink drawings, distinguished by strong linear compositions, expressive intensity and a striking use of black. Across these works, the artist draws from a wide range of visual references, including the cultures of pre-Columbian America, religion, mysticism, contemporary social and political realities, pathological conditions and states of decay. Influences from comic books, graffiti and street art are equally present, contributing to a visual language that moves fluidly between historical, spiritual and contemporary concerns.

Through a combination of sculpture, drawing, light and unconventional materials, A Bathroom and Other… Unexpected Human Stories invites audiences to reconsider ordinary spaces and familiar narratives. The exhibition presents a world where the everyday becomes strange, humor coexists with mystery and visual storytelling unfolds through layers of symbolism and imagination.

Looper’s A Bathroom and Other… Unexpected Human Stories opens on June 11 and remains on view through July 4, 2026, at Ekfrasi – Yianna Grammatopoulou Gallery.
