The three people accused in connection with the deadly explosion in Athens’ Plaka neighborhood have been given until Monday to appear before an investigating magistrate and respond to the charges against them.
The defendants requested additional time to prepare their statements, and their request was granted.
Meanwhile, attorney Giorgos Karapanos, who represents the families of the four Americans killed in the explosion, described their grief and the difficult circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
“They cannot comprehend that they lost their loved ones over a piece of copper worth 20 euros,” Karapanos said, referring to the circumstances that led to the blast.
The lawyer stated that those involved had become aware of a natural gas leak but failed to notify the relevant authorities.
He also raised questions about possible additional liability concerning the installation of the gas meter at the site.
Karapanos said the victims’ families would carefully examine the case file before deciding on the legal steps to take.
