Athenian summer—beyond dangerously hot—is full of outdoor events and parties for all. So how is one to decide what to do, where to go first?

The key to enjoying the hot weather is balance. Knowing when the time is right to freely frolick around the outdoors, and when you should probably stick to the shady indoors.

Here are some suggestions to implement into your weekend plans that are heat-friendly, from a girl who has lived in Athens for over a decade and has only gotten severely sunburned twice.

Something to see: Screening of “Bearcave” At Cine Paris

It is open-air cinema season, and I’d like to introduce you to what I believe is the best film you could catch this weekend in the emblematic Cine Paris.

This spectacular “queer odyssey” has been written and produced by an all-Greek team, which to me reads as rather impressive. Greek landscapes are (more often than not) taken advantage of by foreign filmmakers with sky-high budgets. The internationally award-decorated “Bearcave” by Chrysianna Papadaki and Stergios Dinopoulos shows local minds can absolutely rival big Hollywood, as well as create something fresh.

The film will contain English subtitles.

‘New Realms’ Exhibition At Art Zone 42

This scalding weekend provides a chance to catch this beautifully evocative art exhibition by Greek artist Maria Kritikou, housed in Art Zone 42 Gallery.

It is very often when we speak about art that we discuss media used, art styles and get into the technically difficult aspects of creating the works. My reasoning for picking this particular exhibition this week was the way Kritikou’s pieces make me feel. ‘New Realms’ shows you a different kind of Athenian technicolor on canvas, that to me looks a lot like Athenian summer.

This exhibition has free entry.

Something to do: Visit the Athens Jazz Festival In Technopolis

Who doesn’t love the sweet, melodic sound of jazz?

… well, a lot of people. Jazz may not be your style, but the Athens Jazz Festival has so much to offer centered around a mutual love for good music! What awaits you in Technopolis Athens is more than just sultry saxophones and pianos. Vinyl sales, stands of small businesses selling all kinds of handmade goods, and so much more.

The event is free for all.

Learn How To Make Dumplings In Ano Petralona

Such is the headline, and such is the actual activity. Mindful Cooking is a cooking class with kumbaya spirit—matching the general vibe around The127 Gallery located in Ano Petralona.

In this rather unique workshop on Saturday May 30th, cooking is used as a meditative practice to foster human connection. Taking your high-strung friend is an option (and perhaps a little torturous), as long as you both leave your perfectionist tendencies at the door.

Please check ticket availability, limited tickets sold. Vegetarian and vegan options available.

Something to eat: VARIA Bakery In Syntagma

Perhaps you chose to spend your morning perusing the many Greek museums, enjoying some art. Your next stop, naturally, would be to take a break and grab a bite to eat on the go.

VARIA has recently opened up to bring a little Bavaria to the Athenian urban jungle. Sourdough, specialty coffee and authentic Bavarian pretzels await!

Achilleas Souvlakia In Neos Kosmos

If the heat doesn’t bother you too much and you’re looking for something significantly more filling, you can never go wrong with a pita gyro from Achilleas.

This particular souvlaki place in Neos Kosmos is one of the best in the city. Revered by locals, tourists, and celebrated athletes like Olympiacos basketball player Evan Fournier!

Something extra: Pepper Party In Syntagma

ThisIsAthens City Festival is slowly coming to a close, and it’s doing so with a bang!

Summertime jams and dancing as the sun goes down, with a good cocktail in hand. That’s what this Saturday May 30th looks like in Immitou Street, with Greek radio station Pepper 96.6FM putting together an unforgettable open-air gathering.
