An additional performance has been announced for Goulandris Foundation’s “Jazz in the Museum” concert series after strong demand for the sold-out “International Jazz Day” concert by the George Kontrafouris Quartet.
The new concert on Thursday, May 7 at 8:30 p.m., offers audiences another opportunity to attend the highly sought-after performance.
The quartet will close this year’s concert cycle, titled “Her Voice,” which explored new musical directions by incorporating elements of classical music, lyrical singing, and other forms of artistic expression into its jazz programming.
Led by pianist George Kontrafouris and drummer Alex Coulon, the ensemble will collaborate with emerging jazz musicians, including vocalists and instrumentalists from the Ionian University’s jazz studies program. The performance will feature original compositions as well as new interpretations of well-known pieces.
Kontrafouris, an established figure in jazz, has performed with internationally recognized artists such as Marc Johnson, Arild Andersen, Marcus Stockhausen, Andy Sheppard, Ralph Peterson Jr., and Lou Donaldson. In addition to his performance career, he teaches piano and Hammond organ at institutions in Greece and Finland and has led numerous jazz seminars both domestically and abroad.
The concert marks the conclusion of this season’s series, bringing together established performers and the next generation of jazz artists in a program that emphasizes collaboration and innovation.
