The music of Stranger Things will be performed live in Greece for the first time on Sept. 19, when the series’ composers and creators, Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the band SURVIVE, bring their music to Athens.
The performance will take place at the Theater of the Hellenic World Cultural Center in Tavros, south of central Athens, as part of a tour celebrating the complete story of the Netflix phenomenon following its epic conclusion.
Dixon and Stein will present a sonic retrospective spanning all five seasons of Stranger Things, from the instantly recognizable opening theme introduced in 2016 to the increasingly expansive sounds of the series’ fifth season.
From analog synths to a supernatural epic
Dixon and Stein’s music has become closely associated with Hawkins, Indiana, the fictional town at the center of Stranger Things and its supernatural story.
When the Duffer Brothers hired the two musicians to work on the series, they took on a workload more commonly handled by a larger team of composers and assistants. Their early work drew heavily on the distinctive sound of 1980s analog synthesizers, reflecting the series’ retro science-fiction aesthetic.
As Stranger Things expanded into a sprawling supernatural story, their musical approach evolved with it. Their compositions developed melodies and atmospheres that accompanied the characters’ increasingly intense struggles across different dimensions.
Music has remained a central part of the series’ identity, with Dixon and Stein’s original score woven alongside period songs. One of the most prominent examples came in the fourth season, when Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” became closely associated with a pivotal moment in the story and reached the top of the charts.
The success of Stranger Things also transformed Dixon and Stein’s careers, taking them from the underground synth scene to prominent work in film and television.
A concert designed as an immersive experience
Dixon and Stein won an Emmy Award for Best Original Main Title Score for their work on Stranger Things and have also received multiple Grammy and ASCAP Award nominations.
For the series’ more recent seasons, the duo worked at an intense pace, producing the equivalent of a feature-length film score every two weeks.
Their live show extends beyond the music itself. To create a more immersive experience, Dixon and Stein collaborated with visual artist MFO, also known as Marcel Weber, on a minimalist combination of lighting and sculptural fog.
Dreamlike flashes of light and darker, more haunting movements give the performance a physical atmosphere, blurring the boundaries between a concert and a cinematic experience.
