Some 5.4 million people in Greece, across all age groups, took at least one trip for personal or professional reasons last year, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

A total of 9.6 million trips were recorded, marking a 7.2% increase in the number of people travelling and an 11% rise in trips compared with 2024. Overnight stays reached 85.8 million, while total spending amounted to 4.12 billion euros, up 5.5% and 11.3%, respectively.

Among those aged 15 and over, 4.6 million people took at least one trip, an increase of 8.4% year-on-year. They made 8.2 million trips, up 13%, with 74.3 million overnight stays and spending of 3.86 billion euros, increases of 7.4% and 12.5%, respectively.

Personal travel accounted for 97% of all trips, with the remaining 3% related to business. Compared with 2024, the number of domestic travellers taking at least one personal trip rose 8.7%, while the number of trips increased 13.7%, spending 13.3% and overnight stays 7.4%.

The sharpest increase in the number of travellers was recorded among those aged over 65, who rose by 24%. Within this group, trips increased 28.5%, spending 21% and overnight stays 12.1%.

Shorter breaks also became more popular. Trips lasting one to three nights increased 26.7%, while spending rose 21.6% and overnight stays 27.8%.

Of personal trips, 5.3 million were made by land, 1.4 million by air and 1.3 million by sea. Land travel recorded the largest absolute increase, rising 12.6%.

Non-rented accommodation was used for 52.1% of personal trips, accounting for 71.6% of all overnight stays. Rented accommodation was used for 47.9% of trips, which increased 14.3%, while overnight stays rose 16.1%.

Among domestic trips, 40.7% lasted four to seven days, with average daily spending of 76.70 euros. The corresponding figure for trips abroad was 49.5%, with average daily spending of 152.70 euros.
