Greece has expressed its intention to take a more active role in international efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, emphasizing the importance of maritime security and freedom of navigation.
The statement was made by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis following a meeting in Athens with his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul.
Focus on global maritime security
Speaking after the talks, Gerapetritis underlined that safeguarding freedom of navigation is a universal obligation, essential for protecting the global economy, international peace and prosperity. He stressed that Greece is prepared to contribute actively to relevant international initiatives, in close cooperation with the global shipping industry.
The Greek minister also recalled that the issue had already been raised during Greece’s tenure at the United Nations Security Council in May, highlighting its strategic importance for international stability.
Warning over escalation risks
Gerapetritis warned that any escalation in tensions in the region must be avoided, noting that instability could have wide-reaching consequences, including disruptions to global food supply chains and everyday life for citizens around the world.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global energy and trade flows, remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, making security in the area a key concern for international policymakers.
