The rift within the Greek right has taken a new turn, with Dora Bakoyanni firing back sharply at recent online jabs from former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.

Responding to videos Samaras posted about the party’s 2009 internal leadership election, Bakoyanni pointedly remarked that everyone’s political record has already been written and cannot be rewritten, adding that fighting against reality serves no one.

Speaking to Parapolitika 90.1, she noted that New Democracy forgave Samaras 17 years ago for bringing down a government, later making him party leader and prime minister. She said his record dating back to 1990 speaks for itself, and that time will tell who is proven right, since reality does not change.

“If he’ll cause damage, the Greek people will decide”

Bakoyanni underlined that history has already charted each person’s path, pointing out that New Democracy effectively overlooked the fact that Samaras had brought down the government of Konstantinos Mitsotakis.

Turning to the aims of Samaras’s new party, she argued that his clear goal is to hurt New Democracy. She said it would ultimately be up to Greek voters to decide if he causes damage, once they go to the ballot box.

Asked whether Samaras’s return to New Democracy had been a mistake, Bakogianni said her own priority, both then and now, has always been the party itself, and that she accepted that stance. She contrasted this with what she described as Samaras’s approach, saying he does not put the party first when he pursues this kind of politics.
