Α reference to EU-Türkiye (Turkey) relations and the Cyprus problem will be included in the European Council’s conclusions, according to a draft seen by To Vima.

More specifically, the draft mentions that, in recalling its previous conclusions, that the European Council remains fully committed to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem within the UN framework and in accordance with the relevant UNSC resolutions, as well as in line with the principles on which the EU is founded and the Union’s acquis is based.

The European Union welcomes the appointment of Maria Angela Holguin Cuéllar as the UN secretary general’s personal envoy on Cyprus, the draft underscores. In addition, according to the same document, the EU is ready to play an active role in supporting all stages of the UN-led process, with all appropriate means at its disposal. The European Union attaches considerable importance to resumption of and progress in Cyprus settlement talks, which can also enhance EU-Türkiye cooperation.

As per EU-Türkiye relations, it will be mentioned that the European Council held a strategic debate on the issue, taking note of the communication of the High Representative and the Commission regarding the state of EU-Türkiye political, economic and trade relations.

The European Council also requests that work progresses on the joint communication in line with previous conclusions and in a phased, proportionate and reversible manner, subject to additional guidance from the European Council as needed.

An extraordinary session of the European Council will take place next week, April 17 and April 18, and until then the conclusions are under negotiation.
