Greece has reaffirmed its support for the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, with Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis emphasizing the country’s close relationship with the institution and its role in protecting the status quo of holy sites.

Speaking at an official luncheon in Athens held in honor of Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem on Monday, Gerapetritis described the visit as an event of “deep spiritual significance” and stressed Greece’s continued commitment to supporting the Patriarchate and the Ancient Patriarchates.

“The rights of the Patriarchate are a matter for all Hellenism,” Gerapetritis said, underlining what he described as a historic bond between Greece and the Orthodox institutions of the Holy Land.

The foreign minister said Greece works closely with the Patriarchate of Jerusalem to safeguard the status quo of religious sites and the special arrangements governing the Holy Land. He added that the relationship goes beyond geopolitical considerations and reflects a long-standing historical connection.

Gerapetritis also referred to the broader regional situation, noting that the Patriarch’s visit comes at a time of renewed instability in the area.

He assured Patriarch Theophilos that Greece would continue standing by the Patriarchate and its community, while supporting efforts aimed at peace and stability.

The minister also announced the signing of a strategic memorandum for the Patriarchate of Jerusalem together with Culture Minister Lina Mendoni. He highlighted Greece’s support for the International Orthodox University at the Baptism Site, noting that Greece was the only country represented at its inauguration through a government envoy.

New Legislative Initiative for Clergy Abroad

During his remarks, Gerapetritis also announced that a bill concerning clergy serving Greek communities abroad would soon be submitted to Parliament.

He described the initiative as an important step in strengthening institutional support for the Ancient Patriarchates. The framework will be implemented through the Church of Greece while respecting the autonomy and role of the Patriarchates.

Concluding his remarks, Gerapetritis reiterated that Greece and the wider Greek community abroad will continue supporting the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, contributing to the preservation of Orthodox unity and the protection of Christian presence in the Holy Land.
