Under the leadership of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Cabinet will convene at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 30, against the backdrop of the unfolding OPEKEPE agricultural subsidy scandal that is shaking the ruling New Democracy party. Earlier, at 10:00 a.m., the swearing-in ceremony of the new members of the government will take place before President of the Republic Kostas Tasoulas.

The political atmosphere has grown increasingly tense following the release of recorded conversations implicating officials in clientelist practices. The revelations have further eroded public trust and intensified internal party friction.

In response, the prime minister has reshuffled several key positions in an attempt to buy time and defuse the situation, pointing to the resignations of Migration and Asylum Minister Makis Voridis and other senior figures as evidence that political responsibility is being acknowledged.

In Monday’s Cabinet session, Mitsotakis is expected to directly address the OPEKEPE scandal, echoing his candid remarks from Sunday’s social media post. In that message, he openly admitted to the government’s failure, stating:

“I know you trusted us to fix what’s broken, not perpetuate it — no matter how hard the fight against the deep state may be. The chronic flaws of OPEKEPE allowed for clientelist behavior, unfortunately even from within our own ranks. While important efforts were made to clean house, let’s be honest: we failed. The conversations now coming to light provoke indignation and anger.”

This rare public concession marked a significant shift in tone for Mitsotakis, undermining his longstanding narrative of a clean break from the entrenched political practices of the past.

A Busy Cabinet Agenda

Beyond the scandal, Monday’s Cabinet meeting is set to cover a broad policy agenda, including a new labor bill that has drawn criticism for allegedly eroding workers’ rights and working hours. The key items include:

• Presentation of new EU-funded programs focusing on environmental sustainability, development, daily life, and social cohesion.

• Unveiling of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence.

• Introduction of the draft law “Fair Work for All – Simplifying Legislation – Supporting Workers – Real Protections.”

• Proposed legislation to restructure the Civil Aviation Authority.

• Draft law aimed at strengthening Greece’s public broadcasting service.
