The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis met with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Doha, Qatar on Sunday, February 2. Gerapetritis is in Qatar as part of his three-day visit to Middle Eastern countries. According to a related statement from Athens, the two men engaged in discussions which focused on bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey while they also discussed regional and international developments.

According to diplomatic sources from the Greek side the meeting between the two foreign ministers took place in a positive atmosphere.

The two officials discussed the upcoming Greece-Turkey High-Level Cooperation Council, which will be held in Ankara in the near future. The two ministers agreed to work together to maintain existing the constructive climate between the two countries through structured dialogue, including Political Dialogue, the Positive Agenda, and Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs).

They also focused on the Cyprus issue ahead of a broader meeting, while the Greek side raised concerns regarding the ongoing studies on electrical interconnection.

Regarding regional matters, Gerapetritis and Fidan exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, in light of the Greek minister’s upcoming tour in the region. Gerapetritis will be one of the first EU foreign ministers to visit Gaza following the implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Prior to his meeting with Fidan, the Greek minister had met with the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani.
