Greece’s economic recovery and transformation since the debt crisis were in focus during a major European political event, with senior EU officials praising the country’s progress in recent years.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary of the European People’s Party on Wednesday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola described Greece as a “success story” under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Her remarks highlighted what she presented as a significant turnaround in the country’s economic trajectory, following years of financial instability.

From crisis to recovery

The event also revisited the period of Greece’s sovereign debt crisis, a defining chapter for both the country and the eurozone. Former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker emphasized the importance of keeping Greece within the eurozone during that time.
