The student team Aiolos NTUA from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) claimed first place in the overall ranking of this year’s International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC), held in Nantes, France, during the final week of June 2025.
Their wind turbine, tested in a wind tunnel, stood out among entries from leading universities around the globe. Combining efficiency and sustainability, it earned the highest overall score in the competition. In addition to securing the top spot, Aiolos NTUA also placed second in the Power Production category.
Origins and Mission
The Aiolos NTUA team was founded two years ago by students from NTUA’s School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, united by a shared vision to develop innovative solutions in the field of wind energy.
Innovation Through the Years
Since its inception, the team has designed and built several small-scale wind turbines, including one installed on the island of Kythnos in 2023, the wooden turbine Meltemi (2023), and Zephyros, a fully 3D-printed model with significantly enhanced performance (2024).
A Global Stage for Sustainability
The ISWTC is an international competition focused on promoting efficient and environmentally sustainable wind energy solutions, particularly for energy communities and remote regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa.
Celebrating Teamwork
Aiolos NTUA’s victory and accolades represent the culmination of dedicated student efforts over the past few years, supported by the guidance of NTUA faculty and researchers.
