Μake us preferred on Google Two firefighters have been hospitalized in the central Greek regional unit of Boeotia after developing health problems while battling the large wildfire that continues to burn in the area.
According to Michalis Giannakos, president of POEDIN, the federation representing public hospital employees, a 50-year-old volunteer forest firefighter was admitted to Thebes General Hospital on Friday with cardiac symptoms.
Medical examinations determined that he had suffered a heart attack, and he was subsequently transferred to Thriasio General Hospital for further treatment.
On Saturday morning, a second firefighter, a 40-year-old forest firefighter, was taken to Thebes General Hospital after experiencing respiratory problems during firefighting operations. He was admitted to the hospital’s internal medicine department for observation.
Health System on High Alert
Giannakos said Greece’s National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB), hospitals and health centers remain on heightened alert because of the ongoing wildfires, preparing both to treat injured people and to support any evacuations of healthcare facilities if necessary.
“EKAB paramedics are on the front line alongside the forest firefighters, while hospitals and health centers remain on standby to respond to the needs created by the wildfire fronts,” Giannakos said.
He also emphasized the dangerous conditions faced by forest firefighters, adding that the profession has long-standing demands that, according to him, remain unresolved.
