Weight loss injections that have gained widespread attention in recent years are not intended as a quick solution for people looking to lose a few extra kilos, but as medications designed to treat obesity, a medical specialist has warned.
Speaking to Greek public broadcaster ERTnews, internal medicine specialist Anastasia Eftychidou highlighted concerns over the growing use of these treatments without proper medical evaluation, noting that they are often promoted on social media as “miracle” solutions and can be obtained without a prescription.
“These medications are designed for obesity, and using them simply to lose 2 or 3 kilos before going to the beach is not the correct use,” Eftychidou said.
Doctors warn against unsupervised use
According to the specialist, weight loss achieved without proper dietary changes and physical activity may not produce the desired results. Instead of primarily reducing body fat, it can lead to the loss of muscle mass, making it harder to maintain weight in the long term.
She also raised concerns about how easily some people can access these medications without first consulting a doctor.
“It has become relatively easy for anyone to get them, and the issue is that they are being used without someone first being assessed by a doctor,” she said.
Like all medications, these treatments have specific indications and contraindications. A person who takes them without medical guidance may have an underlying condition or risk factor that makes their use unsafe without knowing it.
Possible side effects include nausea and stomach pain
Eftychidou explained that the most common side effects are related to the digestive system and may include nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
However, she stressed that people who are not medically considered obese may be exposing themselves to unnecessary discomfort and potential risks.
“When someone is not obese, there is no reason to put themselves through such discomfort and risk more serious side effects,” she said.
The specialist added that there are safer and more appropriate ways for people who want to lose a small amount of weight to achieve their goal, without turning to medications intended for treating obesity.
