A 23-year-old man attacked an 18-year-old with a knife in Agios Dimitrios, a suburb of Athens, injuring him in the head and back in an incident reportedly linked to an attempted robbery.
According to initial information, the 23-year-old tried to take the younger man’s cellphone and wallet. When the 18-year-old resisted, he was reportedly stabbed.
The victim was injured during the attack and taken for medical treatment. He has since escaped danger, according to Giorgos Kalliakmanis honorary President of the Association of Police Officers in Southeast Attica, who spoke on the Greek television program “Koinonia Ora MEGA.”
Police are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, including whether the two young men knew each other or lived in the same neighborhood.
Victim says he was attacked during robbery attempt
According to the account cited by Kalliakmanis, the 18-year-old said the attacker tried to rob him and take his cellphone and wallet before stabbing him when he resisted.
Kalliakmanis said the knife wounds could have had much more serious consequences but did not penetrate deeper, and that the victim is no longer in danger.
He stressed that the circumstances still need to be established by the Hellenic Police, noting that it remains unclear whether there was any previous connection between the two young men.
He also pointed to what he described as growing aggression and violence in society, saying that incidents involving knives, guns, brass knuckles and pepper spray are increasingly being seen among both adults and minors.
He noted that violence can emerge not only during robberies but also during ordinary disputes that in the past might have ended without serious consequences.
Psychologist points to family and exposure to violence
Psychologist Vana Papakitsou linked youth aggression to the environments in which children and teenagers grow up.
She said young people are increasingly exposed to violent content through social media, video games and the internet, as well as through what they encounter in everyday life and at school.
However, she identified the family as a particularly important influence, emphasizing the role of boundaries and rules in children’s socialization.
According to Papakitsou, children learn from their families what they should and should not do, and these rules shape how they behave outside the home.
She said that exposure to violence, verbal abuse, indifference or neglect within the family can contribute to anger and insecurity that children may later express in society, including at school, in their neighborhoods and elsewhere.
The investigation into the Agios Dimitrios attack remains ongoing.
